Murakoz horse comes from the region near the Mura River in southwestern Hungary, where it is bred today, as well as in Poland and in the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

The breed arose as a result of crossing Polish and Hungarian mares with stallions of Percheron, Norik and Arden breeds. At the beginning of the 20th century, Arabian blood was added to the Murakoz breed, and although it is referred to as cold-blooded horses, they have certain qualities of Eastern horses that are not found in most breeds of heavy trucks.
